| "At a time when law and judicial cooperation are major instruments of integration throughout the European Union, the extent to which factors shaping legal cultures act as barriers to this process is of significant importance. This text challenges the norms and traditional approaches to comparative law study, particularly the analysis of the French legal system. It suggests the need to re-think comparisons between common law and civil law systems. Professor Bell examines the idea that there is not a single French legal culture, but several; some of which affect the way the legal system operates, while others affect writing about the French legal system. The interplay of the cultures and the dynamics of influence are explored through an examination of the four main branches of law - civil, criminal, administrative and constitutional." -- Cover |
